Department of Neurology

History

  • The department of Neurology was set up in 1963 and a full-fledged neuroscience centre was established in 1983. Since then the department has made significant progress in patient care, education and research.
  • The department of neurology cares for all neurologic disorders. A special OPD for Epilepsy is held every Monday. Facilities like Long-Term Video EEG monitoring are provided. EMG-Nerve Conduction and Evoked potentials are also done. The Neurology department has a strong back up from the Radiology and imaging department with a 1.5 Tesla MRI and a 64 slice CT machine. The clinical pharmacology department has facility to do drug levels of several antiepileptic drugs.
  • The Occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech therapy department are well equipped for rehabilitation. Thus the department has evolved into a full-fledged neurological centre equipped with latest diagnostic facilities.
  • It is one of the leading academic neurological centers in Mumbai. The postgraduates in DM (Neurology) have consistently done well at the university with 100% success for the last 7 years.
    The department is involved in several phase III and IV clinical trials for disorders like Parkinson disease, epilepsy, dementia, multiple sclerosis and stroke.

Important moments in the past:

  • Installation of the Nicolet Viking Quest Occular Electro Physiological Testing System with facility of auditory stimulator and visual evoked potentials in 2003. 
  • Installation of a 44 channel Nicolet Viasys VEEG machine that has facility to record long term Video EEG in 2007.
  • Spacious and well equipped wards for neurology on the 7th floor of OPD building in 2008.
