Department of Urology

History :

  • The department of Urology at Nair has been associated with stalwarts in the field of Urology such as Dr. F.P. Soonawala and Dr.K.C.Mehta. The first renal transplant in Mumbai was performed at Nair Hospital in 1985. Endourological procedures for renal and ureteric calculi, as well as transurethral resections for prostate were first performed in Mumbai at Nair Hospital. As a result; a strong foundation in Urology was laid down even prior to the setting up of an independent department in 1991. In 1991the department was headed by able Prof. Dr.(Ms).Shobha Lal. It was recognized by the MCI and students were admitted for the M.Ch. Degree in Urology. Nair Hospital is the only Municipal / Government hospital in Maharashtra to provide a comprehensive Urodynamic facility.

Important moments in the past :

  • First public hospital to have urodynamic lab in the state of Maharashtra. This facility helps in the diagnosis and management of complex voiding disorders and urinary incontinence as seen after spinal cord injuries and birth defects.
  • Lithotripsy :The hospital with state of art ESWL (Extra corporeal shock wave lithotripsy) machine helps to remove stones without surgery on OPD basis.
  • Laparoscopic Donor Nephrectomy
  • The department is equipped with Holmium LASER Machine of 80 watt. We perform Holep for prostate enlargement especially in patients on pacemaker and anticoagulant therapy.

Endourology procedures for treatment of stone diseases help in reducing the hospital stay and the cost of treatment.
  • The hospital with state of art ESWL  (Extra corporeal shock wave lithotripsy) machine helps to remove stones without surgery on OPD basis.
  • Laparoscopic surgery initiated a few years back have advanced to more complex procedures like Pyeloplasty, Adrenalectomy, Radical nephrectomy, Radical cysto-prostatectomy, Radical prostatectomy and Donor nephrectomy.
  • LASER machine of 80 watt is a state of art laser machine of German make.  Now we tackle prostate enlargement with very large prostate gland, in patients on pacemaker and anticoagulant therapy, which we could not manage by endoscopic means earlier.
  • Now poor patients and BMC employees and their dependants can avail of this new addition to our armamentarium. We do RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery) with the help of laser and flexible ureterorenoscope & flexible nephroscope.
